Nokia N97 - Review and deals from Mobile Choices
Editor's CommentsThe N97 marks Nokia's first N-series offering into the touchscreen phone market. It's an impressive start with the N97 Featuring a 3.5 inch widescreen TFT display, ideal for movies and games. A slide-out full QWERTY keyboard packs in the usability meaning email text and instanat messaging are a breeze. The home screen is packed with customisable interactive shortcuts for easy access to your favourite applications and social networking sites. Inside the sleek body beats a powerful processor and a chunky 32GB of memory meaning you get a lot to play with straight out of the box. For the memory hungry there's a memory card slot for easy expansion. A Carl Zeiss lens is the perfect partner to a respectable 5.0MP camera. Wi-Fi, inbuilt GPS and HSDPA services mean connectivity is no problem either. What's in the boxIn the top layer of the box you'll find the N97, an attractive handset, that feels well put together, with a appealing finish to the touch front and back. The action of the sliding tilt screen is smooth and natural, and it has that reassuring snap as it moves back to cover the keyboard. Alongside the handset are the headphones and a seperate stylus for use on the touch screen should (though we found that fingers were sufficent!) Onto the lower layer then and you'll discover the obligatory software CD for your PC connectivity (alond with Nokia software suite). The N97 comes with a new charger (which we understand has a universal connector to fit all future models), along with an adaptor most of the older Nokia handset that you might have stuffed in the desk drawer. Depending on where you ordered your handset (the one we looked at came from Vodafone you may also find the Nokia MD-8 speakers in the box; great for travelling). Moving on, there's a TV-out connector, USB cable and hands free adaptor with controls for music and media playback. Finally there's that all important cloth for keeping the touch screen clean. All in all, a comprehensive package from Nokia. Our verdictIt's a really well-constructed phone; smooth sleek and chrome finish give it the ahhh factor (not forgetting that snap/click action of the screen). For general, all round gadgetry the N97 packs a lot and we believe will be an even better performer following the expected software upgrade. It will of course be considered against the offerings of HTC, BlackBerry and Apple iPhone but it is perhaps an unfair comparison. It's a unique form-factor with the abity to tilt its screen against a flat surface and "reveal" the QWERTY inputs underneath; if that's the flavour you like then there's simply no point looking any further; the n97 is for. No, it's not the very best at email, nor does the touch screen out-perform the iPhone but then there is compromise in every handset and we think the balance is pretty good with the N97. All told, we give 5 stars for this one (and no, we've never been given a free one or a pay-off, that's just how we roll with the scores). Key features of the Nokia N97 |
