Mobile Broadband Explained

A Guide to Mobile Broadband

Mobile Broadband is a fast and easy way of getting the Internet whether it is via your mobile phone or through a USB dongle to use with your laptop when you are on the move.

Mobile Broadband generally refers to the practice of using more frequencies than usual to pass more information in a shorter space of time. Broadband is a relative term, the wider the bandwidth of a communication the larger the amount of information which can be sent at the same time, but how broad your broadband is depends on where you are and what systems are involved in carrying the information from your laptop or mobile phone to the computer out in the World Wide Web which contains the information you are looking for.

As has become apparent with conventional broadband you don’t necessary get what you are paying for. The description of a service as 3Gb, 7Gb, 15Gb or even 50Gb often refers to a theoretical maximum, a speed most broadband users will never see even when demand on the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is low.

According to Channel 5’s Gadget Show, which has campaigned for realistic estimates, you are more likely to get a larger part of the speed you are paying for when you opt for a small bandwidth package. As this was averaged over the whole country it is inevitably the larger cities and commercial centres that fair better.

If you live in an area such as London, Birmingham or Manchester you are far more likely to be able to make use of the higher end broadband speeds as the Metropolitan areas receive the lion share of the mobile phone networks investment. In rural areas where mobile reception is patchy you will find that mobile broadband is less effective, however, you can still make use of it as long as you can get reception.

Functions such as e-mailing are much less demanding than downloading videos and music and you will find that you can send an e-mail almost anywhere, even when a normal voice signal would be patchy.
